Sequim boys 51, North Kitsap 48
(Poulsbo) -- The Sequim boys basketball team got some clutch free-throw shooting from senior Jeremie Oliver as the Wolves downed the North Kitsap Vikings 51-48 in Poulsbo Tuesday night.
Oliver scored Sequim's final six points, hitting both ends of three consecutive one-and-one opportunities.
The fourth quarter comeback win for Sequim elevated the Wolves into a tie with Kingston for the top 2A Olympic League seed to the district tournament.
Sequim and Kingston are both 9-5 in league play with two games remaining, after Kingston lost 59-52 Tuesday at Olympic.
The Bucs would have the tiebreaker over Sequim with two victories against the Wolves this season.
North Mason lost at Port Angeles Tuesday 61-54, dropping the Bulldogs a game behind the frontrunners at 8-6.
After a nip-and-tuck start where the Vikings led 15-12 at the first quarter break, North Kitsap pushed ahead to a nine-point advantage 22-13 with 4 minutes left in the opening half.
Sequim closed on a 7-0 run trailed by just two -- 22-20 -- with 1:45 before intermission.
Oliver set off the streak with a pair of easy baskets off Viking turnovers.
NK led 35-20 at the break and 36-31 going to the fourth quarter.
John Textor scored 12 of his game-high 17 points in the second half.
The Wolves tightened their defense and rebounding in the final stanza and took the lead 39-38 with 3:37 left on Josh McMinn's basket.
A pair of costly NK turnovers led to consecutive Sequim hoops as the Wolves pulled ahead by five with 45-40 with a minute to go.
The Vikings tried to foul their way back into the game, but the strategy was spoiled by Oliver's free throw shooting heroics.
North's Berkley Nilles banked in a 23-foot bomb from the right wing, closing to 45-43 with 40 seconds to go.
Oliver was fouled in backcourt and hit both ends of the one-and-one, making it 47-43.
Jordan Seth cut it to 47-45 with 20 seconds remaining.
The Vikings sent Oliver back to the stripe, where he hit two more for a 49-45 Sequim advantage.
NK's Austin Abrahamsen hit the last North trey with 8 seconds left, cutting it 49-48.
Nilles and Abrahamsen shared team-high honors for the Vikings with 11 points apiece.
Oliver's last pair of charity tosses was perfect -- he finished the game 9 for 10 -- making it 51-48, the final score as North's desperation shot was missed at the buzzer.
Sequim nailed 13-of-19 from the line for the game, 11 of 13 in the second half.
Tuesday night's contest was the ninth Sequim game decided by fewer than 4 points this season.
