PREP FOOTBALL: New Westminster (BC) 35, Sequim 20
(Sequim) - The New Westminster Hyacks scored three consecutive second-half rushing touchdowns to pull away from a halftime deadlock and beat the Sequim High Wolves 35-20 Friday night.
The British Columbia Triple-A squad used their size advantage on the offensive line after intermission to open up an up-tempo Wing-T running game.
Shifty wingback Angelo Tanjuaquio crossed the Sequim goal line twice in the second half and quarterback Tommy Robertson scored his second rushing TD with 7:24 left, giving the visitors from Canada a 35-14 lead.
A final Sequim score came with 4:37 remaining when freshman backup quarterback Dylan Lott threw a 2-yard scoring strike to Brett Wright.
Early Sequim lead
Sequim had the initial 6-0 lead in the contest on the opening drive when Adam Knapman ran 5 yards to pay dirt.
New Westminster capitalized on a fizzled Sequim punt fake and scored on the following play on a 35-yard waggle pass from Robertson to tight end Stewart Sommerfeld.
Wayne Palmer's PAT kick gave the visitors a 7-6 lead with 2:21 left in the opening frame.
The Hyacks went ahead 14-6 with 5:06 left in the opening half after Robertson rambled 23 yards on a keeper.
Huge kickoff return
Just when the home crowd's enthusiasm was dwindling, Sequim responded with Brett Wright's 87-yard kickoff return for a touchdown.
A 2-point conversion pass from quarterback Miguel Moroles to Josiah Anastasi tied the game at 14 with 4:51 until intermission.
The Hyacks improved to 2-0 on the campaign, including last week's 21-14 victory over South Delta.
New Westminster hosts Centennial Friday in its Homecoming game.
Sequim (0-1) will meet River Ridge of Lacey Friday at Sequim High School.
