PREP FOOTBALL: Bremerton 41, Sequim 35
(Sequim) -- A tale of two halves on Salute to the Military Night at Sequim High School.
A valiant Wolves comeback fell just short as Bremerton beat Sequim 41-35.
The visiting Knights dominated the first half and led 34-0 at intermission.
However, the Wolves roared back into the contest with 4 consecutive second half touchdowns.
A late Sequim onside kick recovery in the final minute left the Wolves sighting in the enemy goal line from the Bremerton 41 with a chance for the winning score.
A fourth down play from the Bremerton 15 with 27 seconds remaining resulted in a turnover-on-downs.
After one final running play, the Knights escaped with the six point victory.
Salute to the Military with special jerseys
Sequim varsity players honored Armed Forces members past and present by wearing special camouflage jerseys for the game, customized with the name of a soldier.
Players presented their jerseys to their sponsor after the game as a keepsake.
Bremerton roars in opening half
The Knights scored on the fourth play of the game when Skylar Mullins picked up a dropped Sequim punt snap and rambled 39 yards for a TD just a minute-and-half into the contest for the initial 7-0 lead after Mike Brown's PAT.
Bremerton quarterback Connor Mahoney lofted a perfect 25-yard scoring strike to Brown with a minute left in the opening quarter, making it 14-0 Knights.
Brown scored two more TD's before intermission, the first on a 16-yard scamper to paydirt, boosting it to 21-0 Bremerton.
The assembled crowd at Sequim thought it was a done deal after the Knights got another pair of scores in the final 1:43 of the half.
A 15-yard pass interception return by Cameron Dunklin and a 20-yard Mahoney-to-Brown hookup came just 8 seconds apart, fueled by a muffed Sequim kickoff return that made it 34-0.
Second half comeback
Master Chief Larry Moroles of the U.S. Coast Guard scored on three second-half quarterback keepers -- from 4, 54 and 15 yards, respectively. The third Moroles TD with 11:27 left in the game, closed the gap to 34-28.
Bremerton rolled on a long drive to seemingly resume control at 41-28 with 6:21 remaining on a 10-yard TD run by Calvin Cardwell.
Sequim turned the ball over to Bremerton on downs with 3:16 left at the Knights 32.
Cardwell though, looking for second effort after a rushing first-down, fumbled the ball back to Sequim at the Bremerton 49 with 2:58 left.
Ten plays later on 4th-and-10 from the Knights 25, Moroles connected with Coast Guard Aviation Maintenance Technician Michael Sterrett for the 25-yard touchdown pass, closing it back to six points at 41-35 with 1:12 to go.
The Wolves went for the obvious onside kick attempt, shifting all 10 defenders to the right side of the field and made the recovery at the Bremerton 41.
A 22-yard slant pass from Moroles to US Army Sergeant Bill Fairly put Sequim at the Bremerton 19.
After a first down incompletion, Sequim had to burn a timeout with 39 seconds left on a near fumble on a botched quarterback - running back exchange.
Moroles got 9 yards on a scramble out-of-bounds on third down, forcing a 4th-and-6 from the Bremerton 15 with :27 seconds left.
Flushed from the pocket, Moroles was unable to find a receiver and was pushed to the sidelines well short of the first down, allowing the Knights to return home with a 2-and-1 record, 1-0 in Olympic League play.
The Wolves fell to 0-3 (0-1 in Olympic League).
Sequim will visit Poulsbo Friday to play the North Kitsap Vikings while Bremerton with host North Mason.
